How to Clean Ceramic Tile Floors

July 21, 2015 3:18 pm Published by

Cleaning ceramic tile floors is relatively easy. It’s not rocket science. One of the most important things you should do is to make sure that spills don’t get comfortable. Clean them up right away. In this article, we’ll go over how to clean ceramic tile floors so you can keep them in proper condition.

When a spill happens

Get a mop or a cloth, hot water and a mild household detergent.  Wet floor and let it sit just a minute. Then, clean the ceramic tile quickly and carefully.

Sweeping and vacuuming

Dirt can adhere to the surface of a ceramic tile especially if you have a style with texture. Regular sweeping will loosen and remove most of the dirt. You can also use a vacuum cleaner to sweep. Use one without a beater bar to avoid dulling and scratching tiles. Usage of vacuum cleaner attachments helps suck up the dirt along edges or in-between tiles. The quick sweeping or vacuuming will remove dirt and debris before it gets embedded in the tile or grout. You can also mop with warm water to enhance your tile’s gloss, shine and color.

Heavier cleaning for your ceramic tile floors

Mild scrubbing with a soft brush or an electric polisher may be necessary for textured tile. After you clean with a mild detergent, you should rinse thoroughly with clean, warm water to remove leftover residue. You can wipe the tile dry with a clean towel to remove any film.

Some Dos and Don’ts

  • Do clean up spills as quickly as possible. This way your grout won’t get stained.
  • Don’t use steel wool, scouring powders or anything too abrasive on your ceramic tile. They can scratch the finish of your tile.
  • Do realize that ceramic tile, while very durable, is not indestructible. It can crack or chip under extreme force.
  • Don’t use bleach or ammonia-based cleansers. They can discolor your grout if you use them too often.

Remember that cleaning ceramic tile floors is important. You should handle with care to keep your grout clean and the tile from cracking. If you would prefer that we do your ceramic tile floors for you, give us a call at 512-782-4578 in Austin. Maids Around Town would love to help you out.
