How to Get the Grout Cleaned Out

Your grout may need cleaning. Wait! What’s grout? It’s that stuff that’s in between you tiles whether they’re in the shower or on your floor. We’ve got some tips on how to clean grout. Let’s get started, shall we?

Because it’s generally a light color and has a porous composition, grout is prone to staining. In a tiled entry way or room, dirt and grime are usually what cause the problems. In the kitchen, spills are more likely to take the blame. Soap, mold and mildew make grout a difficult thing to deal with in the bathroom. Regardless of the location, you should be able to clean grout using only common household products and a little bit of elbow grease.

The best way to clean tile grout is with plain water and a stiff-bristled brush. Many home stores carry these brushes. They’re specifically designed for this purpose. Just spray warm water on the grout lines and scrub in a circular motion. Then, you let it air dry.

For heavier dirt and mild stains, you should use vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with half vinegar, half warm water. Spray it on the grout and let it stand for five minutes. Then, you can scrub it with a stiff brush. Moderate stains may require you to use hydrogen peroxide. You can use it straight or mix it with baking soda. Apply the paste to the grout; let it sit for five minutes, then brush clean.

For mildewed grout in tubs and showers, we suggest that you use a grout brush with a 1:5 solution of chlorine bleach and water. Remember – you should never use bleach with an ammonia-based product. Make sure the area is well-ventilated. When you’ve finished cleaning, you only need to rinse the area to remove all the traces of bleach.

To keep your grout clean and free from stains, you should probably spray it with vinegar and wipe it down once a week. You can also wipe grout with rubbing alcohol to keep mold and mildew away. Just a few wipes once a week can go a long way to keeping your grout clean and save you a lot of time and effort cleaning.
